From new legislative wins to groundbreaking investigations and expanded education tools, our work together helped bridge the knowledge gap between the climate crisis and the solutions we urgently need.

We’re proud to share all of this and more, in our 2024 Impact Report.

Who We Are: Building Climate Literacy for a Just and Thriving Planet

At GCEF, we believe that knowledge is power. Our mission is to inform, equip, and empower the Canadian public to take meaningful climate action. As a registered charity, we produce independent, science-backed research and educational resources, free from corporate or government influence, to help people understand environmental issues and advocate for change.

Our work is built on four key pillars:

Investigations and whistleblowing

Bridging the knowledge gap

Spotlighting solutions

Promoting public engagement

Investigating the Fossil Fuel Industry’s Influence and Strengthening the Law

Fossil fuel companies don’t just pollute the air, they pollute our politics.

In 2024, we concluded our largest-ever two-year investigative research project in partnership with Greenpeace Canada.

Highlights of this work include:

Publishing the “So Sue Me” report, which shined a light on how Canada’s Big Five banks are financing climate destruction while oil and gas companies exert enormous influence over public policy.

Researching and filing a formal complaint with the Competition Bureau over the country’s most powerful oil industry lobby group, Pathways Alliance, which ran a multi-million dollar ad campaign claiming the tar sands are on the path to net-zero carbon emissions. The complaint contributed to new anti-greenwashing legislation and had Pathways Alliance delete content from its website and social media posts after new truth-in-advertising regulations came into force.

Conducting polling with Angus Reid on greenwashing and sharing the results with the public in an education campaign. Canadians polled overwhelmingly supported stronger legislation (93%).

Closing the Climate Knowledge Gap

We know that Canadians care about climate action. But too often, they don’t know where to start.

In 2024, GCEF responded to this challenge by investing in accessible climate education for all. Research has shown that fewer than 1 in 5 Canadians feel well-informed about climate solutions. That’s why we created a new suite of free, science-backed resources on GCEF.ca to help teachers, students, and community members understand complex issues and take action.

Whether you’re a high school teacher looking for a ready-to-use lesson or a concerned citizen trying to separate fact from fiction, our Education Hub is built for you.

What’s Next: A Bold Vision for 2025

As we look ahead, one thing is clear: the stakes are higher than ever. Powerful industries continue to lobby against progress. Disinformation continues to spread. And vulnerable communities continue to bear the brunt of climate inaction.

But we also see something else: determination, courage, and an unshakable belief that a better world is possible. In 2025, the Greenpeace Canada Education Fund is preparing to take bold steps forward.

We’ll be publishing two major investigative reports. The first will take a close look at Canada’s largest forestry company, revealing its lobbying efforts and the public subsidies it receives. The second will explore barriers to equitable access to nature, exposing how systemic inequalities limit many Canadians from experiencing and protecting the natural environment. These investigations will not only expose environmental and social injustices, they will also offer the data and context needed to advocate for real change.

We are also continuing to grow our digital Education Hub, making climate learning tools more comprehensive and accessible than ever. Our vision is to become the trusted, go-to source for environmental education in Canada, empowering individuals, educators, and communities with the knowledge to take informed climate action.

With continued support from donors, we plan to scale up our outreach efforts. This includes building partnerships with educators, collaborating with environmental groups, and strengthening connections with youth networks and communities on the frontlines of climate impacts. Through these relationships, we aim to ensure that more Canadians have access to trusted information and tools to shape their future.

Thank You

None of this progress would be possible without our supporters, people like you who believe in truth, action, and the power of education.

As we move into 2025, we’re filled with gratitude, determination, and excitement. There’s so much more to do, but we are ready, and we know you are too. Together, we will continue to build a more informed, more engaged, and more resilient Canada.

Thanks to the incredible support of people like you, 2024 was a milestone year for the Greenpeace Canada Education Fund (GCEF).
