{"id":2862,"date":"2023-12-08T00:15:10","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T00:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gcef.ca\/?p=2862"},"modified":"2025-09-11T20:28:07","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:28:07","slug":"canadian-law-firm-climate-impact-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gcef.ca\/en\/story\/2862\/canadian-law-firm-climate-impact-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Law Firm Climate Impact Report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/7X1PLYorxN8?feature=share\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Law students for Climate Accountability Report Introduction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Greenpeace Canada Education Fund recently supported the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/646e3b899493ae261720e957\/t\/654683af760ff006fa9b0aff\/1699120058948\/LSCA_UTLU_Report_Final_Design_Updated_Front_Page.pdf\">The Canadian Law Firm Climate Impact Report<\/a>, developed by The University of Toronto Law Union (UTLU) and coordinated by the Law Students for Climate Accountability (LSCA).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The report is first-of-its-kind, analyzing the Canadian legal industry\u2019s work for fossil fuel companies, and the role that five of the largest and most influential Canadian law firms play in exacerbating the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n<p>The statistics brought to light in the report are stark. <strong>These five firms reported facilitating over $618 billion in fossil fuel transactions between 2008 and 2023.<\/strong> McCarthy T\u00e9trault is responsible for an astonishing $174 billion of that figure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The report also highlights firms&#8217; facilitation of resource extraction by criminalizing Indigenous resistance. For example, Fasken successfully obtained injunctions for Coastal GasLink which ordered the Unist\u2019ot\u2019en Camp, established to prevent unauthorized access to the clan\u2019s land,&nbsp; be dismantled. The land defenders faced three raids by heavily armed police and 19 people are currently facing criminal contempt charges for defying these injunctions.<\/p>\n\n<p>At the Greenpeace Canada Education Fund, we are proud to support initiatives that continue to uncover the causes and solutions behind our current climate crisis.
