Paper Trail to Nowhere (Part 1: Domtar’s Lobbying Strategies in Canada between 2020 and 2024)
What the Report Covers:
This two-part investigative report focuses on Domtar’s lobbying strategies at the federal level and at the provincial level, with a critical focus on provincial strategies in British Columbia. Domtar, previously known as Paper Excellence, was headquartered in British Columbia at that time. Today, Domtar maintains corporate offices in Fort Mill, South Carolina; Richmond, British Columbia; and Montreal, Quebec.
Crucially, the report provides a detailed financial breakdown of the significant public funding Domtar has received. Our findings culminate in asking difficult but essential questions about the future of forests in Canada. We raise important concerns about the impact and scale of Domtar’s activities and whether the outcomes have truthfully served the goals it intended to advance by receiving this public funding.
Moving from Findings to Action:
This work is not just about uncovering facts — it is about driving change. Based on the robust results of our investigation, Greenpeace Canada outlined specific, actionable recommendations for both federal and provincial governments. In the coming weeks, Greenpeace Canada will be sharing these recommendations directly with relevant Members of Parliament (MPs) and ministerial staff to call on our government to take action on the findings in our report to lead to policy reforms.
