On October 18, 2025, something new happened for Greenpeace Canada Education Fund (GCEF) and Greenpeace Canada. For the first time ever, we swapped banners for bibs, research reports for running shoes, and took to the streets for the Toronto Waterfront Marathon with our inaugural team: Running for the Planet.
It was a crisp, bright morning along Toronto’s waterfront, the kind of day that reminds you why we fight to protect this planet. Among the thousands of runners were four amazing participants who had been tirelessly training and fundraising for GCEF.
To our runners, donors, and supporters: thank you for believing in what’s possible when we all go the distance for the planet.
We’re so proud to introduce the members of our first-ever marathon team:
- Erin Power, Donor Growth & Acquisition Specialist, Greenpeace Canada
- Tim Richardson, GCEF Board Chair
- Jackie Gallagher, Director, GCEF
- John Doherty, GCEF Board Director

Supporters, friends, and families cheered from the sidelines, waving banners and ringing cowbells. Many others followed online, sending messages of encouragement and donations that fueled our runners through every kilometre. The atmosphere was electric and deeply meaningful.
All funds raised through the marathon go directly to the Greenpeace Canada Education Fund, supporting projects that educate, engage, and empower people to act for the planet. In a world where environmental challenges can feel overwhelming, events like this remind us that hope is a collective effort, and that it can be joyful, sweaty, and full of laughter, too.
While the race may be over, our journey isn’t finished yet. Our team is still working toward a $5,000 fundraising goal, and we’re getting closer with every contribution.
If you haven’t had the chance yet, it’s not too late: Donate now to support Running for the Planet and help power our work for a greener, more peaceful world.
