Climate change is the defining issue of our time. Yet, most Canadian classrooms are under-equipped to help students make sense of it. Teachers are asking for support. Students are asking for hope. And across the country, families and communities are asking how we can better prepare the next generation for the future they’re inheriting.
That’s where Greenspeakers Grow comes in.
Launched by the Greenpeace Canada Education Fund (GCEF), Greenspeakers Grow is a new initiative designed to close Canada’s climate literacy gap and help young people become informed, resilient, and action-ready.
This next chapter builds on the success of Greenpeace Canada’s original Greenspeakers program, a volunteer-led education effort that has reached more than 17,000 students in over 300 schools since 2016. Now, Greenspeakers Grow will scale that impact, expanding classroom presentations, launching a public speaker series, developing curriculum-aligned resources, and strengthening community outreach efforts.
It’s more than climate education. It’s a national movement for youth empowerment.
Why Now?
A 2023 needs assessment commissioned by GCEF found that students and educators across Canada lack access to the resources they need to teach and learn about climate justice. Too many classrooms still overlook intersectional and decolonial perspectives, emotional well-being, and practical skills for civic engagement.
At the same time, young people are feeling overwhelmed. In the face of climate anxiety, they need tools, not just to understand what’s happening, but to act on it.
Greenspeakers Grow meets this moment with programming rooted in science, justice, and hope. Our trained presenters, working in schools, communities, and public spaces, will help young people make sense of the climate crisis and see themselves as agents of change.
What to Expect
By 2028, Greenspeakers Grow aims to reach more than 34,000 learners of all ages through classroom presentations, spark important conversations through public events, and connect with communities at gatherings across Ontario, British Columbia, and Quebec. Presentations will be delivered by a growing national team, supported by bilingual, curriculum-linked resources tailored for both teachers and students.
Whether it’s a Grade 3 class learning about ecosystems, a public talk on climate justice, or a community film screening, Greenspeakers Grow will plant the seeds of understanding, hope, and action.
Get Involved
We believe that climate education should be accessible, inclusive, and empowering. Over the coming months, we’ll be rolling out opportunities to get involved, whether you’re a teacher, a volunteer, or a community member passionate about climate action. Stay tuned for ways to bring Greenspeakers to your classroom, attend a public event, or join our growing network of changemakers.
You can also support this work by making a donation. Every contribution helps us reach more students and communities with trusted, hope-filled climate education.
Together, we can raise a generation ready to lead us toward a more just and sustainable future.
